I have a few cocktails I make on a regular basis: Old Fashioneds; Corpse Reviver no. 2; Margaritas, Negronis and Sazeracs being among the favourite. I have not, however, until recently been able to get my hands on a bottle of Maraschino liqueur, so was unable to make authentic Aviations and a few other older style cocktails.
Well, as luck would have it, the last time I was in one of the specialty liquor stores, they had just received 6 bottles, so I scooped up one, and trotted home to try my hand at an Aviation. I have to say, it wasn`t bad, but wasn`t the divine experience I was thinking it might be. Well, not wanting the bottle to go to waste, I got a couple of more recipes using this ingredient…
I present to you, the Last Word!
This cocktail is awesome! the ingredients seem odd, but result in a perfectly balanced cocktail. It is now in the `short list` of cocktails that will be made on a more regular basis! plus the recipe is easy to remember, as it is equal parts of everything! I first discovered the recipe courtesy of Robert Hess over at drinkboy.com, and had stashed it away until I got my hands on the Maraschino liqueur.
The Last Word:
- 3/4 oz. gin
- 3/4 oz. Maraschino liqueur
- 3/4 oz. Green Chartreuse
- 3/4 oz. fresh squeezed lime
Shake with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. No garnish!
One is plenty!
